Martha Stewart Is Trying To Kill Me

August 14th, 2007 by A.L. Hatch · 16 Comments

baby-and-dogMy sister is Queen Of The Crafties.

She owns her own business, selling hand-made baby items, and her house is always stocked with stuff like pipe cleaners, glue and glitter.

I shouldn’t have been surprised, then, that my little sister came on our joint summer vacation laden with bags of craft supplies. My niece and nephew regularly spend time crafting at home, and they expected to be able to do the same on Cape Cod.

My daughter got one look at those bags and it was all over.

Craft-a-palooza 2007 ensued.

Now, I’m terrible at making homemade things look pretty - so much so that I absolutely dreaded art class in elementary and middle school.

Pretty much everything I made came out looking like an ugly blob.

Watching The Poo glue sequins on paper with abandon, I realized how mean it is of me to impose my hatred of all things crafty on my child. I may not like it, but she loves it.

Loves it.

Of course we do some artistic activities at home - we do a lot of painting and drawing. Just not so much “creating” with sundries like pom-poms and feathers.

When we returned from vacation, I promised my girl a trip to the Gigantic Craft Emporium. We turned down that first aisle, and my life will never be the same.

I got an eyeful of the Martha Stewart line of craft supplies.

And spent over $100 at the Gigantic Craft Emporium.

On craft supplies.

Mostly for me.

The Poo took an uncharacteristic nap that afternoon. Left to myself, I engaged in some dicey adult activity.

I made a card.

By hand.

Help. Me. Please.
